Former Japanese prime minister assassinated

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot with a shotgun during a speech in the city of Nara.

It is reported by Aljazeera, Reuters with reference to NHK, Kyodo.

At the time of the shot, Abe was delivering a campaign speech at the railway station.

An NHK reporter reported that two consecutive thumps were heard during Abe's speech.

After the shot, Abe fell down, bleeding. He was unconscious and reportedly "looked like his heart had stopped."

The attacker has been arrested.
