Not all European countries, even having voted for the candidacy of Ukraine in the European Union, are happy with this event.. So, in Germany they fear the strengthening of the position of Eastern Europe after Ukraine's entry into the European Union.. On Saturday, July 2, writes The Daily Telegraph.

Referring to its sources, the publication notes that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is already ready to change the voting procedure in the EU Council.

"It depends not only on the number of voting countries, but also on the size of their population," the journalists explain.

They also note that if Ukraine joins the EU, it will become the fifth largest country and will have about 9% of the votes in the Council.

It is specified that in Berlin they are afraid that Kyiv's close ties with Warsaw and other Eastern European countries could weaken the influence of France and Germany.

At the same time, Portugal is also skeptical about the idea of admitting Ukraine to the European Union.

Lisbon can become a donor that sends more funds to the EU budget than it receives.

Recall, on June 23, the European Council granted Ukraine the status of a candidate for joining the European Union.

The Cabinet of Ministers said that the opening of negotiation procedures for Ukraine's membership in the EU is expected early next year. The expected date for Ukraine's accession to the European Union is 2029.
