Bulgaria expelled 70 employees of the Russian embassy.

Two planes took off from Sofia with dozens of employees of the diplomatic services and their families, the AP reported on the eve.

The decision to expel was announced on 28 June by acting Prime Minister Kirill Petkov.

He said that Moscow used hybrid war tactics to overthrow his government.. Petkov also noted that Russia will retain 43 of its employees after the expulsion, and stressed that Bulgaria has only 12 diplomatic employees in Moscow.

"All who work against the interests of Bulgaria will be called to return to the country they came from," he said.

In response, Russia threatened to break off diplomatic relations with Bulgaria.. Moscow demanded that Sofia cancel the decision to declare dozens of diplomats persona non grata.
