Mexican journalist shot to death on his doorstep

On June 29, in the city of Ciudad Victoria, the capital of the state of Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico, a journalist from the local newspaper Expreso was shot dead in his own home. He became the twelfth media worker killed since the beginning of the year.

As noted in the media, as a result of the attack on 47-year-old reporter Antonio de la Cruz, his 23-year-old daughter was also injured, she is in hospital in critical condition.

The state attorney general's office said the gun used to kill the journalist was a .40 caliber used only by the military. At the same time, the prosecutor's office admits involvement in the murder of organized crime.

Tamaulipas is a state on the Gulf of Mexico coast where drug cartels are fiercely fighting over lucrative smuggling routes.. Local journalists who report on crime and corruption are particularly vulnerable.
More than 150 journalists have been killed in Mexico since 2000.
