Delivery times for IRIS-T air defense systems from Germany are delayed

09:30 24 July Kyiv, Ukraine

Why is German Chancellor Olaf Scholz being so overcautious or just slow? He again delays the transfer to Ukraine of 11 IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, which Kyiv intends to buy directly from a German company. This was reported by the Welt am Sonntag newspaper, citing its own sources.

According to the publication, the request from the Ukrainian side was submitted in early July, and the Ministry of Economy of Germany approved it. The final decision must be made by the Federal Government, which houses the chancellor's office.

As stated in the material, there has been no progress on this issue over the past three weeks.

It is noted that the cost of one IRIS-T system is about 140 million euros, all 11 - about 1.5 billion euros. Kyiv, with the financial support of Berlin, wants to buy air defense directly from the manufacturer - Diehl Defense.

At the same time, as indicated, the delivery of the first IRIS-T to Ukraine can be carried out before the end of this year. Then the transfer of all the promised systems will take from four to five years, Welt calculated.

The newspaper emphasizes that one such installation can protect a large city from air strikes.

Earlier in Berlin, they said that the IRIS-T air defense system promised to Ukraine is still at the production stage in Germany. It will be ready for transfer to Ukraine at the end of summer.
