US Senate backs Finland and Sweden joining NATO

08:14 04 August Kyiv, Ukraine

The United States approved on Wednesday the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO.

This is the most significant expansion of the 30-member alliance since the 1990s, as it grapples with the fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The result of the vote was 74 to 1 and easily surpassed the two-thirds majority of the 67 votes required to support the ratification of both countries' accession documents.
