The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, is sure that the leaders of the European Union will officially grant the status of a candidate for EU accession to Ukraine and Moldova on June 23.
Michel said this when he arrived at the summit of EU leaders in Brussels.
On June 17, the European Commission published its opinion, in which it recommended recognizing the European perspective of Ukraine and granting our state the status of a candidate for EU membership.
The draft prepared conclusions of the meeting say that "the European Council has decided to grant the status of a candidate country to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova."
Ukraine applied for EU membership on February 28, 2022, the fifth day of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The EU notes that official negotiations with candidates will begin after they fulfill the conditions specified in the conclusions of the European Commission regarding applications for membership.
